Maxam KT17 17-Piece 9-Element Surgical-Stainless-Steel Waterless Cookware Set Review

Maxam KT17 17-Piece 9-Element Surgical-Stainless-Steel Waterless Cookware Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had a Townecraft home demonstation and thought it was wonderful. The salesman was great and really made me excited. Then came the price. I've bought cars for less than that! I started looking around for that same brand on auction sites and found it 1/2 the price, but still very expensive. I went to the waterless cookware site and decided to give Maxam 9 a shot. It took 2 months to get, but the pans are good heavy quality, very easy to clean, and keep the food moist. Waterless cooking, however, takes patience to get right and you are likely to burn some meals if you stick to the time guidelines in the book. I've had them for about two monts now and finally got rid of all of the old teflon and rusty pans...they aren't coming back. I've cooked with the Townecraft pans before and you aren't going to see enough of a difference to warrant 6-8 times the price. Maxam 9 (World's Finest) is almost as good and won't kill your budget. As Zig Ziglar says "It's easier to justify cost once, than apologize for quality forever" The price is more than what you are going to pay in WalMart, but the cost over a lifetime will be much, much lower because you won't buy pans again.

Providing a wide range of essentials, this 17-piece cookware collection makes a nice choice for those setting up a first-time kitchen or for anyone looking to upgrade. The set includes a 1-2/3-quart covered saucepan, a 2-1/2-quart covered saucepan, a 3-1/5-quart covered saucepan, a 7-1/2-quart stovetop roaster, an 11-3/8-inch skillet, a dome cover for the roaster and the skillet (can also be used directly on the stovetop as an extra skillet), and a flat cover for the roaster and the skillet, as well as a double boiler unit, five egg cups, and an egg utility rack. Use the saucepans when making homemade marinara sauce, cooking lentils, or heating up soup; the stovetop roaster works well for cooking large cuts of meat; and the skillet provides a wide flat base and tall sides--perfect for one-dish meals like chicken and rice. Melting chocolate's effortless with the double boiler in place (it can also be used directly on the stovetop as a 3-quart saucepan), and the egg cups allow for making poached eggs. The collection also provides a handy recipe book with step-by-step instructions.
Best of all, the cookware can be used with the healthy "waterless" method of cooking. "Waterless" cooking allows for quickly cooking food on the stovetop at low temperatures and with only a very small amount of water--if any. It cooks in a way that retains almost all the vitamins and minerals (only 2-percent average mineral loss)--so veggies come out the same vibrant color as when they went in the pan. Even more, the high-quality cookware does not require additional grease or oil when cooking, which means low-fat meal options. Steam-cook food without the need for a steamer basket, bake a chocolate cake on the stovetop--between conventional cooking and the "waterless" method, the options are endless.
To ensure fast, even heating with excellent heat retention and no hot spots, Maxam's "waterless" cookware features 304 surgical stainless-steel construction, inside and out, with an encapsulated thick aluminum disk in the base, which consists of nine elements: chrome, nickel, manganese, silicon, aluminum, iron, copper, molybedenum, and vanadium. The nine-element construction means that the cookware can be stacked, one on top of another, for space- and energy-saving convenience. Start by cooking on individual burners; when the steam-release valve in the lid whistles, simply stack the pans to finish cooking. For example, a hearty stew with carrots and potatoes can cook in the bottom pan, while broccoli cooks in a medium-size pan above that and another veggie cooks in a smaller-size pan on the very top. The self-sealing lids help lock in flavor and nutrients, and they can be inverted for nesting inside the proper pan before stacking or hanging the cookware when not in use. Even more, the thoughtfully designed cookware features nonslip phenolic handles that are welded to the outside (no rivets or screws inside the pan) and can withstand an oven's heat up to 350 degrees F (though the cookware is designed for stove-top use only--no need to turn on the oven when it's possible to bake on the stovetop). The handles are resistant to heat, cold, and detergents, and they offer a hanging hole at the end to help save on cupboard space. Safe to use on ceramic, electric, and gas stoves, the cookware carries a limited lifetime warranty and cleans up easily by hand with warm, soapy water (pots can go in the dishwasher, but the lids should be hand-washed due to the steam-release valves).
What's in the Box 1-2/3-quart, 2-1/2-quart, and 3-1/5-quart covered saucepans; 7-1/2-quart stovetop roaster; 11-3/8-inch skillet; dome cover for the roaster and skillet; flat cover for the roaster and skillet; double boiler; 5 egg cups; egg utility rack; recipe book with instructions. 1-2/3-quart covered saucepan measures approximately 7-1/2 inches wide by 3-3/8 inches high 2-1/2-quart covered saucepan measures approximately 8-5/8 inches wide by 3-3/4 inches high 3-1/5-quart covered saucepan measures approximately 9-1/8 inches wide by 4-1/8 inches high 7-1/2-quart stovetop roaster measures approximately 11-7/16 inches wide by 5-5/8 inches high 11-3/8-inch skillet measures approximately 11-7/16 inches wide by 2-13/16 inches high Double boiler measures approximately 9-1/16 inches wide by 4 inches high Dome cover for roaster or skillet measures approximately 11 inches wide by 3-3/8 inches high

Paula Deen 3 Quart Stack & Steamer, Stainless Steel Review

Paula Deen 3 Quart Stack and Steamer, Stainless Steel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We recently ordered this steamer and were pleasantly surprised at how well constructed it was and how well it works. Both the pot and steamer insert are heavier weight than comparable steamers, and appear to be as durable as they are attractive. The copper bottom heats up quickly and evenly, and the knob on the lid does not get too hot to handle. It can steam enough vegetables for 3-4 people. Make sure you read the label and soak the copper bottom 20 min. in baking soda solution before use to remove its protective coating.

Childhood memories are so important to me. My copper bottom pots and pans remind me of the treasured time I had with my mother. Cooking with friends and family is so much more fun when you have the right tools, and these pans will give you pleasure for years. In fact, I hope you'll pass them along to loved ones, a time honored tradition in our family.

Cuisinart Chef's Classic Stainless Steel 4-Piece 12-Quart Pasta/Steamer Set Review

Cuisinart Chef's Classic Stainless Steel 4-Piece 12-Quart Pasta/Steamer Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this to replace an older smaller pasta cooker. I have about 20 pieces of the Cuisinart Multiclad Pro cookware but couldn't justify spending over $100 for a large stockpot. The only notable difference is that the Multiclad has the sandwiched aluminum all the way up the sides of the pot. Not really necessary I thought for something I would use mostly for boiling water. Besides, the heat source is only really from below and that extra multiclad surface only adds to the weight.
I love the shiney exterior and the large capacity compared to my previous pasta pot. The steamer insert is a nice little extra but I'm not sure I'd want to haul out this enormous pot just to steam a few veggies. The lid is more domed than Cuisinart's standard lids and has a more sculpted handle. Cleanup is easy but only if you have a very large sink. The handles on both the pot and insert are solid and appear to be very securely attached.
So what's not to like?
This pot was a lot bigger than I anticipated. So large in fact that it doesn't fit in my normal cookware drawer. I ended up having to divide the pot from the insert just so it would fit in the cabinets. And that domed lid just adds to the height. The insert didn't need to stick out of the pot as far as it does and the handles on the insert come out further than those on the pot itself. Where the pot will barely fit, the insert won't just because of the handles. The other problem with the height of this pot comes when you try to use it on your stove. I nearly have to stick my head under the fan hood to see inside it!
The inside of both the pasta insert and the steamer basket won't drain completely. There are no drain holes along the bottom outer edges so the water continues to drip after removing it from the pot whenever it's tilted. I'm also not sure why they made the outsides of the insert and steam basket so shiny but made the insides brushed. This is almost the opposite of their fry pans. A shiny smooth inside would have made cleanup easier without the use of Teflon.
It would have received 5 stars except for these minor issues.

Oneida 8 Quart Multi Pot Review

Oneida 8 Quart Multi Pot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although I searched for the metal content of this item here at Amazon's listing and elsewhere, the only available info is that it is "professional weight steel construction". Well that SOUNDS good. So I ordered this.
When the pot arrived I looked in vain on the package for exactly what the stainless steel content is. There is no information on the box and no accompanying documentation. I wasn't even sure if the piece is made in the USA.
So I contacted Oneida. The rep informed me that this piece is 18/0 stainless. How this mix is interpreted as "professional" cookware is anyone's guess. According to info about stainless steel, 18/0 is an inferior grade and prone to spotting and rusting without the nickel. It's also why it is frequently less expensive, as the addition of nickel costs more for the manufacturer.
If you only wanted to boil water in this pot, it would likely be fine. However, I wanted to use it for a variety of purposes (you know... a "multi-pot"!). Cooking acidic foods such as chili or spaghetti sauce could be a problem in the 18/0 stainless. So I am returning this and will look for something else.

Norpro KRONA 6 Quart Stainless Steel Steamer Cooker 3 Piece Set Review

Norpro KRONA 6 Quart Stainless Steel Steamer Cooker 3 Piece Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This pot is extremely well-made and should easily last a lifetime. It works very well as a steamer, but equally well as a stock pot for making soups & stews by simply removing the basket. I have also used it to re-moisturize dried-out breads and rolls. The base is heavy and perfectly flat so it won't "rock" when placed upon glass cooktops. The lid fits very well and it does not "rattle" when steam escapes. It is a terrific value.

Tatung Tac-11kn 10 CUP Stainless Steel Rice Cooker Review

Tatung Tac-11kn 10 CUP Stainless Steel Rice Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I researched dozens of rice cookers trying to replace my trusty 12-year old National. Only this time, I wanted to avoid non-stick materials. That decision considerably narrowed the field, excluding most of the big name brands like Zojirushi, Panasonic, and Tiger. The all-stainless steel construction of the Miracle ME-81 and Nutriware cookers seemed appealing at first, but their steamer trays looked a bit shallow. The pricey Buffalo Brand rice cooker from Malaysia provided a very modern design, lots of functionality, and electronic features. However, the Buffalo cooker's LED battery has to be replaced by the manufacturer every three years or so. In fact, all fuzzy logic cookers have similar battery replacement issues. The prospect of paying extra for service and shipping each time the battery died detracted from the appeal of having a quality long-term cooker. And the truth is that I never used the timer on my National anyway. So, another approach was needed.
That's when I stumbled upon the Tatung TAC-11KN in an Asian appliance store. The all-stainless design looked sleek, but the overall appearance seemed a bit "old school." No fancy electronics. No specialized cooking settings. Just an on switch and a warmer on/off button. Ah, but looks can be deceiving.
As I learned more about the Tatung TAC-11KN, I realized that this thing is an amazing multi-cooker. It handles rice of all kinds; it's steaming capacity is far larger than the competition; it can boil and simmer soups and stews; and can even serve as a Chinese hot-pot cooker. After cooking is completed, food can be kept warm if you prefer, but if you'd rather not then leaving the warm button off means the power shuts off automatically when cooking is done. I've found warming to also be helpful as a pre-cook feature, providing an excellent way to enhance the soaking of brown rice.
This machine can produce up to 10 cups of cooked rice, but it'll do smaller amounts just as easily. I chose this size over the 6-cup unit, not because I cook tons of rice each day (I don't), but because this one has more steaming potential. I've made brown rice, steamed fish, Chinese steamed eggs, xiao mai, steamed man tou buns, and xi fan (congee). And they all turned out great.
New users should expect a bit of trial and error adapting to the cooking style of this model. It's a good idea to first run the cooker a few times with steam water in place but no food to eliminate a slight burn-in aroma that occurs only during the break-in period. Thereafter, forget what you already know about rice cooking and just follow the directions. To make X cups of uncooked rice, use the small 6-ounce cup that comes with appliance, not an 8-ounce measuring cup. When it says to add water to the inner pot, fill the water up to the desired cup level as shown on the wall of the inner pot. When adding water to the outer cooking chamber, follow the markings on the little measuring cup, i.e. fill to X level on the cup for every X cups of uncooked rice used. (This is a small amount, but appropriate.) Don't add X full cups of water to the outer cooker unless the recipe actually calls for "cups" of water. Due to the fractured grammar found in the instructional booklet, I was a bit confused about this at first, but eventually everything made sense.
The genius behind this model is its indirect heat. There are two main parts: an outer cooker and an inner pot where you place the food. A modest amount of water goes into the outer cooker, then whatever water your recipe requires for the inner pot. During cooking, steam surrounds the inner pot on all sides, so food doesn't stick to the bottom or dry out. The domed lid keeps the steam as well as the flavors inside, while keeping condensation off the food. Vapor is released via two tiny holes in the lid. On occasion, some vapor may be released along the lid's edge, but food does not boil over. All you hear is a soft whistling sound as the steam escapes through the vent holes. The lid may bob up and down a bit at times, which is disconcerting the first time you see it. However, as you get more acquainted with the cooker, you'll come to enjoy its charming little idiosyncrasies. I have to admit it's kind of fun to watch.
Foods come out moist and fresh, never dry and tough. Even leftovers taste as good as when they were first made. The unit comes with an inner lid for the pot so you can cook rice, then keep it warm on the side if you're steaming additional dishes. When steaming, the inner pot is replaced by a steaming rack that sits inside the cooker. Items can be placed directly on the rack or in a bowl/plate atop the rack once the water is boiling. The lid seals in the steam, making cooking surprisingly quick. It's important to let the water boil first before you add food for steaming. Cooking time is measured from that point on.
This unit is very energy efficient. The energized cooking period ends when the water in the outer cooker evaporates. However, cooking can continue for an additional 10-15 minutes. The secret is in the accumulated steam, which envelopes the food and finishes the job on its own. This is an integral part of the unit's rice-cooking process. Both brown and white rice are done to perfection and in less time than the fuzzy logic machines. Cleanup is very easy. Just wash the inner pot out with soap and water.
I found a series of four English language You Tube videos showing tons of recipes you can make using a Tatung indirect cooker. Not just rice dishes, but everything from dim sum to lobster to steamed cake. There's also a recipe manual on the Tatung USA web site, but you have to look for it under the TAC-20C link.
The machine's capabilities can be expanded by purchasing Tatung's TAC-S02 stainless steel steamer set. (In stock on several websites.) That set consists of two large steaming chambers plus a flatter steamer tray. All pieces nest into one for easy storage. When in use, they fit together in layers atop the cooker after the inner pot is removed. The steaming trays are separate, so you can choose to use one, two, three or four layers at once. You can steam one course using the basic steamer rack inside the cooker, a second course in the first steamer compartment, a third course in the second, and a fourth course atop the flat steamer tray covered by the unit's domed lid. That's four dishes for the time and energy cost of just one. The steamer set is unique in that the steam holes are located on the outside edge of each stack, not all over. This keeps the flavors of each dish separate.
The versatility and reliability of these machines is amazing. In Taiwan, Tatung has been selling indirect cookers like this one for over 50 years. Something like 90% of all households there have one, and 80% of the cookers are still in use after 30 years. You can't get much better than that.

West Bend 85157 7-Quart Oval-Shaped Crockery Cooker Review

West Bend 85157 7-Quart Oval-Shaped Crockery Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this crock pot because I was looking for something simple, oval shaped, and with a minimum 5 quart capacity. This looked just perfect, until I got it home and opened it.
When I set the base down on my counter, it rocked. Thinking there was something underneath or that the cord was trapped under a foot rest, I picked it up and reset it. Still tippy, with the lightest pressure on one of the handles or adjusting the lid. Thoroughly confused, I took out the crock insert and turned the base upside down.
I discovered the problem: This appliance is designed with only *3* legs. There are two legs in the front, where you would expect them on an oval shaped crock. The back, however, only has a SINGLE leg, slightly off center. Not only does this make the product tippy, but makes filling with food tricky. If the weight of the food is not perfectly balanced, (think an end roast) the crock will not sit level, it tips up off one of the front legs. In addition, if you were to stir hot food, you could EASILY cause the product to tip due to weight redistribution or pressure on the bottom of the pot, causing the hot contents to splash.
I believe this product has a dangerous design, and recommend finding an alternate product.

West Bend 84716 Versatility 6-Quart Oval Slo-Cooker Review

West Bend 84716 Versatility 6-Quart Oval Slo-Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What I love about this product:
- Cooking times are accurate. If a recipe specifies 8 hours to cook a pot roast, that's how long it will take. I've never owned a slo-cooker that came close to this degree of accuracy, and I've owned many over the years!
- Ridiculously easy to clean (non-stick).
- The removeable cooking pot is very light-weight, and can be used in the oven, on the stove, or in the refrigerator, hence the term "versatility".
- 6 quart capacity and oval design accomodates most recipes and cuts of meat...it is ideal for me.
- I've cooked 15-20 meals of all types with this cooker and have NEVER had a problem with the results.
Why I could not give this product 5 stars:
- It does not have an on/off indicator (light), nor does it have an "off" setting - once you plug it in, it goes into a "warm" mode, even though the heat switch is turned all the way to the left.
- Speaking of switches, the one on this model appears (to me) to be a bit flimsy with no positive feedback as to whether it is on high or low or somewhere in between. No big deal, and for all I know it might last through a nuclear war, but if it ever breaks, the appliance will probably be rendered useless.
All in all, based on ease of cleaning, light-weight design, and of course consistency of results, this is the best slo-cooker I've ever owned and would, despite its price, strongly recommend this appliance to any and all interested in purchasing a slo-cooker.

We got this crockpot about a year ago and have used it maybe 15 times. We hand wash the crockery. The last time we used it, we noticed lots of black flecks in our soup, ranging from tiny (at first we thought it was pepper) to about 1/2 inch in diameter. It was the black enamel of the pot flaking off into our food! When we washed the pot, our sponge was black with enamel. Yuck! I suppose you get what you pay for.

Oyama CFS-B12U All Stainless Rice Cooker Review

Oyama CFS-B12U All Stainless Rice Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I LOVE rice and just wanted a reliable, quality appliance to make it for me while I worked or did other things. So after sifting through hundreds of non-stick crappy cookers, leaking and exploding cookers, and the countless bad reviews, I finally came across the Oyama stainless rice cooker. I ended up purchasing it on Bonton.com because it was on sale for $49, but their customer service is absolutely wretched, and I would go back and spend the extra $20 here at Amazon for quicker shipping and better service (not mention, Amazon won't triple-bill you for one order and take over a week to put the money back in your account).
PROS:
* Easy to clean. Ridiculously easy to clean. I tend to get eczema on my hands when I wash them frequently, so I appreciate that I don't have to use a bunch of soap and scrub the pot to get it clean.
* Cooks white rice, brown rice, short grain, long grain, blah blah...I've used many types in the cooker and they never burn. I add about 1/2 cup more water than the instructions say because I like my rice more moist and sticky.
* Keeps the rice warm and moist for a long time after it's done cooking. I tested this for a 24 period and their little booklet was right...the rice was fine.
* I love the stainless steamer insert tray. When the rice is done, I put frozen organic veggies in the steamer tray, close the lid, and come back in 5-10 minutes and everything's ready to eat.
* No spills or leaks or crappy, cheap parts.
* Fits on the counter really well.
* I really love that everything is stainless inside, because I know nothing is going to leach into my food.
CONS:
* I can't think of any, actually. I'm really happy with this unit and I hope it lasts a long time!
I hope you find this review helpful.
Best,
Stephanie

I don't know why the other reviewer rated this versatile slow cooker so badly? I have used mine for over a year for roasts, whole chickens, chili, soups, etc. and all are done to perfection on "low". Sounds to me like the other reviewer had a defective one. This slow cooker really IS versatile! I have the stainless steel model, not the black aluminum one. You can slow cook all day or speed things up by using medium or high temperature settings. I will replace mine immediately if it wears out...don't know what I would do without it! I use it almost every day.

The reason this item is called Versatility, The EverydaySlow Cooker is due to the ways it can be used. With the highly polished stainless steel cooking vessel on the base - it's a slow cooker. The vessel can also be used in the oven or on top of the stove, when browning a roast to slow cook is desired. The vessel can be set in the freezer and is dishwasher safe. The base doubles as a mini grill, perfect for grilling a burger, a couple of eggs, toasted cheese sandwiches or anything else that fits. A very VERSATILE product.
