Norpro Stainless Steel 10 Inch Egg Poacher Skillet Set Review

(More customer reviews)In a competitor's (let's say Brand X) poacher with plastic (ugh) cups, the thermal conductivity of the cups is so low that eggs effectively cook only from the top down from being directly exposed to the steam. Result: after 9 minutes of poaching (at 7300 feet), the yolk (which floats on top) and the top half of the egg white are firm; meanwhile the egg white on the bottom still quivers like jelly and is semi-transparent (ugh). And the cooking pan is quite shallow (just under one and one half inches inner measure), with the result that boiling water easily spills over on top of the poaching eggs, creating a real mess inside and out.
The stainless steel egg cups on this unit are perfectly formed and slightly flattened on the bottom with a thermal conductivity so good that eggs cook pretty equally from all sides. The pan is quite deep (just under two and three-eight inches inner measure) so that the poaching tray rides very high over the surface of the boiling water. The result is a perfectly poached egg, no messes, to whatever degree of firmness of the white one wants. Yet one can still have a soft or partially soft yolk, impossible to achieve with "Brand X" above. At an elevation of 7300 feet, poaching time using this pan for a firm white and medium (non-runny) yolk was 6 minutes; for a firm white and softer yolk, between 4 and 5 minutes. Lower elevations should adjust these times downward a minute or two.
Because of its' stainless steel composition, depth and diameter, the pan can also be used for other cooking. Indeed, this reviewer dares to suggest that despite its higher price, this unit is almost a mandatory addition to any good cook's staple of cooking utensils. Because of bad past experiences with the kind of riveted handle attachment to the pan used here, which breaks off too easily, this reviewer docks this unit one-half star. Aside from that, the design and materials of this product are generous indeed; it's appearance is so attractive that this reviewer left it sitting on top of the range as general décor. The only other gripe is with the shipping expense which was one-fourth of the total cost. But in all fairness the heavy-duty packaging did protect the glass lid and unit as a whole.
If you are looking for a great egg poacher, buy this model!

I like the six-cup size better than the 10-cup cooker that I had before -- more efficient and takes less space, and our family seldom needs more than six cups of rice. It worked great for four months and then died for no reason. Now the lights don't turn on and it doesn't cook any more; and I can't find any information that it has any warranty. I'll look for a different brand of rice cooker to replace it.

(More customer reviews)We got this to replace a burner bought off the shelf. It died within the first week. I have been much happier with the results for this burner as a replacement for our dead stove. In fact, it heats up faster that our stove used to. Produces good heat quickly and has worked well in almost all situations.
The only issue I have is with what seems to be an overtemp safety because it will cycle itself on and off. A pot will get hot quickly but it also seems to senses that the pot is still there and hot, and decides to take a rest or turner off the burner for 15-30 sec while things in your pot stop boiling. It seems to come back quickly to reheat again, but cooking with an even hear is lost as the burner cycles on/off.

The wizard who designed this unit seems to think that the low setting requires a certain number of hours, below which the user is not allowed to employ. Also, the sides get blazing hot, and the unit cooks unevenly. I made a big recipe of macaroni and cheese and where it touched the walls of the unit, some parts were just right (golden) and other places were burned black! Stay away from Puck appliances--I also bought his electronic pressure cooker and, again, the controls are bizarre. Instead of high/low like most pressure cookers, it has settings for "vegetables" "meat" "soup" and so on. Thus, you can't know (or specify) the temperature settings, rendering most of your recipes, and most cookbooks, useless. How very stupid.

(More customer reviews)I purchased my Zojirushi Magnetic Induction Rice Cooker because I wanted a first rate cooker. I knew that I would be getting a high-quality product simply because it is 100% engineered and manufactured in Japan. I was also curious how the "Magnetic Induction" worked and what benefits it provided over traditional heating coil-based cookers.
As it turns out, the magnetic induction thing is very, very nice. There is no heating coil at the bottom of this cooker. Instead, magnets are cycled on and off around the pan causing it to heat up perfectly evenly. The thing that amazed me about this cooker is that the traditional "skin" of browned, crusty rice always found at the bottom of other cookers is totally absent. Every single grain of rice you put in is wonderfully cooked coming out.
While this cooker has a large capacity, it handles small quantities wonderfully. As a single bachelor/student, I can't say enough how nice it is to be able to cook only a single cup of rice when I need it. In traditional coil-based cookers, if you want a single cup of rice, you have to cook one and a half or two, because quite a bit becomes crusty/burned at the bottom of the pan. Not with this cooker!
I also have yet to come across a variety of rice that this cooker could not handle. I've used it to cook aromatic Indian basimati rice, wild rice, rice for sushi, Asian white rice, and wild rice medleys. Every single one has come out perfect.
Clean-up is a breeze. The pan simply lifts up and out with two nice plastic handles; they're cool to the touch... no oven mitts required! The non-stick is the highest quality I've ever encountered. It feels as though the inner pot is armor plated. One swipe, a rinse, and it's ready to go again.
To be sure, this cooker is at the high end of the price scale. Having said that, in light of the build quality, cooking excellence, and ease of cleaning... it was worth every penny!

(More customer reviews)Having owned a 5 zone induction cooktop imported from the UK in my previous home, I was already spoiled and no stranger to the responsiveness, efficiency, and pure power of induction cooking as well as the different brand units out there. I was a tad nervous about plunking down $500 for a single induction burner, however, this little workhorse has proven to be one of the most joyously hard working appliances in this old kitchen being used exclusively now while the archaic smooth top stove sits cool and idle.
The heat settings on this unit are spontaneous and responsive with a range that will shame your pro-gas stove or cooktop for putting a perfect sear on a roast and boiling a large pot of water lightening fast, plus all settings in between that are dead on accurate as well as a setting low enough to be used as a hot plate. And all this can be done anywhere, even outdoors. What a concept!
I highly recommend this Viking cooker if you are considering bringing induction into your home and would like a test drive a unit that is truly top notch and representative of the genre.
***Important to remember with all induction cooktops is your cookware must be ferrous or magnetic. You can test your pots and pan bottoms with an ordinary kitchen magnet. (More customer reviews)OVERALL, in balancing its features and price, this small capacity rice cooker is an excellent value. It has a number of excellent features, few of which are mentioned in the brief editorial review. They really should have been, to do this appliance justice:
* fuzzy logic microprocessor control produces EXCELLENT rice: Without reservation I can say that this rice cooker makes the best rice I've ever cooked. Grains are fluffy and don't stick to one another. There's no goo on the bottom, no browning of the rice, and absolutely no burning.
* THICK cookpot (5 mm) makes for even cooking
* titanium non-stick finish makes for easy clean up
* retractable cord of reasonable length
* multiple settings (white rice/mixed, brown, porridge)
* clock with timer for autocook at later time. The default cook time (the one last entered) remains the same until changed, making it easy to set up the next time.
* easy to set digital clock and timer
* no need to unplug/plug to start
* 'countdown' feature tells you when the rice is almost done, beginning at 13 minutes.
Thus far I've successfully cooked white, brown, basmati, and wild rice in this appliance. FYI, the porridge setting can also be used to make risotto.
The only 'down' sides to this appliance are minor:
1. The front to back measurement is longer than side to side, making it most easily placed towards the back of the counter. However, the steam vent is placed at the rear. Unfortunately, if you have cabinets above, this combination of features will result in steam condensing on the bottom of the cabinet--which will NOT result in a good outcome for your cabinets in the long run! This can be dealt with entering the settings you want, then bringing the cooker forward, letting out the cord a bit, and turning the appliance 90 degrees.
2. The manual notes that placement should not be where the appliance will be in the sun, since the appearance of the plastic may change over time. (I think the sun could also heat the rice cooker--something that mainly affects you if you set the timer to start later, or keep rice warm for an extended period.) I mention this because it doesn't appear on the box, and did require that I find another place to put this, where it would always be out of the sun, rather than where I had originally planned.
3. The manual is not the greatest. The cooker is shipped with the inner lid in place. However, there is no mention of how to remove the inner lid; FYI, it's a press-fit, meaning that it should be pulled off gently, using both hands and gentle pressure. After use, the lid needs to be washed, of course. The lid is then replaced in the same way. The instructions for using the pot to prewash the rice are a bit confusing, and there are LOTS of marks in the pot's interior.
4. Its capacity is small. If you are cooking for yourself, for a couple or for a small family/group, for one meal a day, it will meet your needs nicely. If you eat rice twice a day, and don't mind resetting to cook it for the second meal, this will still meet your needs. Otherwise, consider a fuzzy logic rice cooker with larger capacity.

I was really impressed with how good it would hold the heat and how it is almost silent. We were running it for a few minutes and I thought it wasn't hot yet and I looked at the temp gauge and it said 370 degrees. the burners on top are much better than the standard double burners, they are 5300 BTU and Brass to resist rusting.
I think the insulation must be really good since it holds the heat great.
The disposable bottle will last about 6 hours on high for the oven, since you are not always using High, it can last much longer.

(More customer reviews)Frankly, I love my poacher (have had it for 4 years) however there are pro's and con's. First the positives: 1. Aesthetically beautiful. 2. Makes great poached eggs. The negatives are: 1. Cleanup is a bit of a chore. Each of the non-stick egg cups have about 12 little holes in the bottom and I feel compelled to clean them each time with a toothpick to be sure they are clean. 2. The nonstick egg cups can scrath over time which is to be expected (IMO). The thing that irks me is that I cannot find replacement egg cups. This is supposed to be lifetime cookware (and should be for the price). Replacement egg cups would be a nice option (assuming they are trying to make a product that is truly "lifetime"

Swiss Army Volcano Stove (3 Piece Set) Review

(More customer reviews)These things boil water very quickly, with very little fuel. You can bring a liter of water to a boil in about 5 minutes with a fist full of leaves and twigs. Not only is this a great tool for boiling water, but it is also an excellent fire starting tool in general. The stove has the perfect dimensions and ventilation to ignite dry fuel quickly, and to dry and ignite small amounts of wet fuel as well. The open top design allows you to load and dump fuel quickly when it is not being used to boil water.
One thing I do not like about the stove is that the bottle has no holder or handle, and cannot be manipulated outside of the stove until the contents cools or is used up. I find myself using the cork as a handle, pressing it in tightly, and then picking the bottle up with it, but I know this is not the safest way to do things. However, as previously stated, you CAN manipulate the bottle while it is inside the stove with a little cognizances of the potentially hot fuel in the bottom of the stove.
The cup, also being aluminum, must be handled with as much care as the bottle, but does have a handle, so it can be held with hot contents. All of this said, the aluminum construction also means the stove can be packed back up pretty quickly because once the fuel and the water are removed, it only takes a few seconds for everything to become cool enough to handle and pack back up. The thickness of the walls of all pieces, and the corrugation of the stove itself make this item especially resilient, considering its mostly aluminum construction.
Once you are aware of the caveats, and discover that this thing has many other potential uses than boiling water and cooking food, it is hard not to make room in your pack for it. I recommend this product to anyone who needs a reliable camp/survival stove.

After checking reviews on JCPenny, I find other people have same and other problems. Do not buy this. Pressure cooker must be a very safe device.
