We have three Kuhn Rikon pressure cookers that we use almost every time we cook - this is the main cookware we use. It's fast, easy, and it saves energy because it takes less time to cook. And the food's great - I like eating at home better than any restaurant.

This 8-inch, 3-1/2-quart pressure saucepan quickly and healthfully cook foods with trapped steam at temperatures higher than boiling. It's the ideal size for singles, small families, and vegetarians craving steamed veggies, soups, and rice dishes. Using a pressure cooker saves time and 70 percent of the energy normally consumed while cooking. It requires little water so nutrients, flavor, and color are not boiled away. Made of heavyweight, mirror-finish, 18/10 stainless steel that won't react with food, the cooker has two handles and an aluminum disk sandwiched in stainless steel in its bottom to quickly and uniformly conduct heat. It comes with a stainless-steel steaming trivet and a Quick Cuisine cookbook.
Kuhn Rikon Duromatic pressure cookers are designed with safety in mind. The automatic lid-locking device insures that no pressure can build up until the lid is put on correctly. The lid cannot be removed or come off until all pressure has been released. The cookers also provide the ultimate protection against excess pressure. The first indication that too much pressure has built up inside the cooker is the audible hiss as excess pressure is released through the valve. (When the user hears this, the heat should be turned down.) The valve will take care of any over pressurization by allowing steam to escape through the holes located on the valve stem. Additionally, another spring-loaded safety valve in the lid is set to release steam in case of a clogged main valve. This valve is not a "blow plug" like some old American cookers had, but a highly accurate spring-loaded valve that will open at a preset internal pressure and release steam safely and effectively.
This Duromatic pressure cooker can be used on any cooktop. It can go into the oven only at settings below 300 degrees F because of the stay-cool handles and valves. The pot is dishwasher safe, although the gasket and lid should be washed by hand. This pressure cooker carries a 10-year warranty on all non-replaceable parts, material, and workmanship.

Farberware Classic Stack 'N Steam 3-Quart Saucepot and Steamer Review

This has got to be the deal of the century, and not only that, these pans will last you almost that long! My mother has had a set for 35 years, and I've had mine for 5. Nearly indestructible, dishwasher safe, good performers on the stovetop, with stay-cool handles! They even look great after all those years!
Keep in mind that because they are mostly stainless steel, with an aluminum bottom, Farberware does not heat up quite as fast as, say, hard-anodized aluminum such as Calphalon, which gourmets prefer. Stainless steel is a poor heat conductor, while aluminum is good and copper is the best. On the plus side, you can't put Calphalon in the dishwasher and Calphalon does not have true stay-cool handles, like Farberware.
Anyway, how often do you buy a gift knowing that it will still be around 20, 30, 40 years from now? By the way, if the pot does have a problem, they come with a Lifetime Warranty.

What could be healthier than steamed veggies on a bed of rice or pasta? With this stackable set you can utilize the steam from whatever's simmering below to cook whatever's on top. How's that for cooking efficiency? Functional as well as beautiful, this 3-quart saucepot and 2-quart steamer insert are made of heavy 18/10 stainless steel polished to a mirror finish. The pot has an aluminum core in its base to spread heat quickly and evenly. The core is completely clad in stainless steel so, like the rest of the pot and the steamer, the pot bottom resists corrosion and discoloring and cleans up easily. Thick rolled rims add durability and make it possible to pour from the pot without dripping. Because the pot is 4-1/2 inches deep and comes with a tight-fitting, domed lid, it is roomy enough to simmer stocks and soups and can also be used for braising veal shanks or for cooking chili on the stovetop or in the oven. (The handles are oven-safe to 350 degrees F and stay cool on the stovetop.) The pot and steamer are dishwasher-safe and come with a lifetime warranty against defects. --Fred Brack
