Hoping for the best, we bought this primarily for poached eggs. I miss the old Sunbeam egg cooker! It was all metal and lasted for years. It knew what a 'poached egg' was. This one is relatively cheaply made (isn't almost everything nowdays?) It has a metal top, so at least it won't melt into the eggs. The water behaves itself and does not boil over. The steam vent is quite adequate. But although it does its best, plastic egg holders simply cannot poach an egg well. If the whites are completely cooked, the yolk just about is, too. If the yolk is runny, the way a poached yolk should be, at least part of the whites remain uncooked as well. The split handle on the side is well-designed, and the cooker does turn itself off....sort of. You have to unplug it to stop the buzzing and if you leave the plug in, the directions warn it will turn itself back on as soon as it cools off. We are installing a heavy-duty in-line switch on the cord so we don't have to unplug it, but how difficult would it be for the manufacturers do have installed a simple on/off switch in the cooker itself? The four-egg tray should be a three-egg tray for poaching, so that the eggs have enough room not to run over when cooking, or even when putting the poaching section into the cooker.
It will cook your eggs, and that part is nice. While the top gets hot, what else do you expect? It is not at all dangerous if simple care is taken. Cooking means things heat up -- it's part of the deal.
We'll keep and use the cooker. But if we ever find one which has a metal tray of adequate size, can turn itself off completely when done (ideally without that annoying buzzing), and can really poach an egg well, we'll junk this one in a minute and buy the other.

Ideal for busy families or for anyone who appreciates a healthy breakfast, this convenient egg cooker quickly and easily cooks up to seven standard-size eggs at a time. Simply place the eggs in the egg rack, set the egg rack on the boiling dish, and secure the brushed stainless-steel lid. The amount of water added to the unit's boiling dish precisely controls the cooking time--add more for hard-boiled eggs and less for soft-boiled eggs. A power light illuminates to indicate heat-up mode, and once the eggs have finished cooking, the unit delivers an audible signal and shuts off automatically. In addition to cooking eggs in their shells, the egg cooker can be used to poach up to four eggs at a time using the included poaching tray. Other highlights include a stainless-steel heating plate, a steam vent, stay-cool handles, and a removable lid and egg tray for quick cleanup. An egg piercer (prevents eggs from cracking) and a measuring cup come included. The egg cooker measures approximately 6-1/2 by 8 by 6-2/5 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.
